Gipsy Plains Cattle Co – Top Buyer at 2023 Frontier Genetics Inaugural Bull Sale

The Curley family, trading as Gipsy Plains Cattle Co, has been in the cattle business since the 1960s in Cloncurry, QLD. They have settled on Brahman cattle being the perfect fit for their region.

“We place high value on phenotype while also ensuring that most of the cattle we sell can offer EBVs (Estimated Breeding Values) We have used EBVs for many years as one tool to make informed buying and selection decisions for our stud sires aligning with our breeding objectives.

We personally try to inspect prospective bulls when possible, but when we can’t, we have people whose judgment we trust inspect them for us, which was the case for our recent purchases through the Frontier Genetics Inaugural Bull Sale,” said Jacqueline Curley, Gipsy Plains Cattle Co.

Gipsy Plains Cattle Co purchased Lot 84 “Tarramba FG Dexter 4643 (PS)” for $8,500 from vendors Adam and Tracy Gunthorpe, Tarramba Brahmans, Lot 86 “Rockley FG Canute (PP)” for $19,500 and Lot 88 “Rockley FG Sweyn” for $5,500 from vendors Ashley and Kate Kirk, Rockley Brahmans, at the 2023 Frontier Genetics Inaugural Online Bull Sale that was held in October.

“This level of trust and reliability has allowed us to purchase bulls sight unseen and we were really happy with the condition that the bulls were in when they arrived off the truck,” said Jacqueline.

Embracing the belief that “information is powerful,” the Curley family is now collecting comprehensive data on all of their cattle, balancing phenotype attributes with data to support decisions for future breeding selections.

“This forward-thinking approach when it comes to data is undoubtedly the future, a positive movement that the Frontier Genetics group is generating for the betterment of the beef industry,” commented Jacqueline.

While totally respecting others’ choices in their breeding and business objectives, the Curley family believes that just as their decision to breed polled brahmans decades ago has proved to be correct, data and EBV tools are now the next step forward for their own breeding and business decision-making, continuing to focus on selling well-balanced, high-performing bulls and females known for excellent temperament and phenotype. “We will produce good-looking bulls with figures, just as we produced polled bulls and maintained weight and type. It just takes patience, dedication and a passion for what you do.”

“We look forward to many more years of successful collaboration with Frontier Genetics.”
