WHY WE JOINED FRONTIER GENETICS
For a collaborative approach to beef genetics. From both a commercial and seedstock perspective, to be able to source pasture-fed genetics from a 'one stop shop' from a future focused breeding group, underpinned by objective measurement where the data complexity is removed by a simple over arching genetic standard is my why.
ABOUT THE OPERATION
REB Grazing is run by Rebecca (Bec) Burnham and Dan Radel east of Augathella in western Queensland. As commercial producers, they breed, background and fatten Brahman and Brangus genetics.
All rebreed females are expected to wean a calf every 12 months, and those that don’t are culled. The entire herd is seasonally mated (breeders for 84 days & yearling heifers for 42 days) starting 1st November. We aim to produce cattle that thrive in all environments, are low-input, returning maximum kilograms of beef-per-hectare.
In addition to this strict commercial management, REB place another level of rigour on their genetic nucleus herds. REB register, record pedigrees, and measure BREEDPLAN evaluated traits, all to aid in selecting the best genetics for in-herd use and for their clients. (BREEDPLAN traits analysed include; Gestation Period, Mature Cow Weight, Days To Calving, Flight Time, 200WT, 400WT, Scrotal circumference at 400day, 600WT, Rib Fat, Rump Fat, IMF, EMA, Percent Normal Sperm). The data accuracy is also improved by collecting DNA for Dam and Sire verification and genomic values.
At REB, they actively seek collaborations with research projects that gather more information on the non-visual, profit-driving traits, particularly fertility, eating quality, yield and feed efficiency. Past collaborations include working with MLA and UQ in the Phenobank Project. They are currently engaged with the MLA Northern Repronomics and Northern Beef Genomics Projects. Bec travelled globally in 2019 as an International Agricultural Nuffield Scholar, researching how to Optimise Genetic Selection in Northern Australia. Globally, it was noted that leading livestock operations were focused on breeding animals that not only achieved profitability, yet fulfilled environmental and consumer expectation goals.
