Why we joined Frontier Genetics
I believe that the way to get more accurate data and to advance genetic gain quicker, is by groups working together, sharing genetics and collecting data to show how animals hold up in different environments. This will lead into higher accuracies for BREEDPLAN, while also allowing for greater client and personal clarity on the breeding of all cattle.
LANCE BURNHAM
ABOUT THE OPERATION
Boogal cattle offer guaranteed 100% paddock-reared Brahman and Charbray bulls to suit both stud and commercial operations. Females also available.

Boogal Cattle Co, owned by Lance and Janelle Burnham and Lance’s parents, Tex and Bronwyn, operates in the North Burnett area of Queensland. With a herd of 800 females, their breeding-fattening operation focuses on prime steer turn-off for the EU and MSA markets. They keep the best 100 bulls to use for commercial breeding and sell the balance to clients all over Queensland going into many different environments. Their bulls have always been 100% grass fed as they believe this produces the best-adapted, longer-working bulls for their clients.

The way they manage their bulls is somewhat different to most studs: all weaner bulls are run in the same conditions so that they can identify the early maturing and best constitution animals every year. All sale bulls are scrotal measured at 400 days as well as DNA tested and weight-traits recorded to give comprehensive BREEDPLAN figures. The bulls are semen morphology tested at the age of 18-20 months. Additionally, Boogal Cattle have steadily developed polled breeding to ensure safety and longevity for the Brahman herd.

At Boogal Cattle, they also prioritise female fertility, docility-natural temperament and polled traits.  They keep very accurate, comprehensive breeding histories of all the animals bred on their property as well as collecting genomic data on all calves born, to be analysed for potential genetic enhancement.  The entire herd is seasonally mated from mid-November.  Yearlings are joined for a 60-day mating period, heifers for 90 days, and cows for 120 days.  Mated females are expected to wean a calf every 12 months, hold condition and get back in calf.  Any female that does not meet this standard is culled.  Therefore, every breeder in the paddock is a productive unit in the enterprise.
